Environmental Impact of Demolishing a Steel Structure Design for Disassembly

The encouraging Design for Disassembly appears in the literature more and often. Such a design to offer clear environmental advantages. However, there are still not enough research results support existence of these benefits. authors using Life Cycle Assessment method, which assesses energy consumption greenhouse gas emissions during demolition operation steel structure. Steel is completely recyclable and, terms tonnage, most recycled material worldwide. We assessed three scenarios: (1) complete re-remelting (recycling) structure; (2) partial reuse construction elements + remelting (recovery recycling); (3) structure (recovery). GaBi software was used analysis. It found that impact varied significantly among examined scenarios. first scenario poses greatest burden. compared Scenario no. 1, 3’s than 70% lower.
